Damage Assessment & Repair: Inspect the floor for scratches, gouges, or wear. Minor surface scratches can often be addressed with a wood repair kit or touch-up marker. Deeper damage may require filling or professional attention prior to polishing.
Choosing the Right Polish: Identify your floor's finish (e.g., polyurethane, varnish, wax, oil). Select a polish specifically formulated for that type of finish. Using an incompatible product can damage the floor. Always test the polish in an inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility and desired results.
The Polishing Process
Preparation: Clear the room of all furniture and obstacles. Ensure adequate ventilation by opening windows or using fans.
Application:
- For liquid polishes: Apply a thin, even coat using a microfiber mop, applicator pad, or clean cloth, working in the direction of the wood grain. Avoid over-applying or allowing the polish to puddle.
- For paste wax: Apply a thin, even layer using a clean cloth, rubbing it into the wood.

Buffing (if required): Some polishes, particularly paste waxes, benefit from buffing after drying to enhance shine. Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth or an electric polisher for larger areas. Buff gently until the desired level of sheen is achieved.
Maintaining Your Polished Floor
Regular Cleaning: Sweep or vacuum regularly with a soft brush attachment to remove abrasive particles. Damp mop as needed with a pH-neutral cleaner designed for polished wood floors.
Protective Measures: Place felt pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches. Use doormats at entrances to trap dirt and grit. Avoid dragging heavy items across the floor.
Spill Management: Wipe up spills immediately with a soft, absorbent cloth to prevent staining or moisture damage.
Periodic Re-Polishing: Depending on foot traffic and wear, floors may need re-polishing every few months to a year to maintain their protective layer and shine. High-traffic areas may require more frequent attention.
